May 6 -10,2019. Five days dedicated to tastings, winery tours and Sicily’s top UNESCO heritage sites. Over 100 international wine journalists meet up with 50 wine producers to promote Sicily’s image worldwide.

Palermo, May 9th, 2019 –For the first time in 10 years, the city of Siracusa will host the sixteenth edition of Sicily en Primeur, the exhibition which, coming in soon after Prowein and Vinitaly, closes the calendar of the year’s most important events for Sicilian wine-makers. Over one hundred Italian and foreign wine journalists will gather here for an exclusive preview of all the wines produced from the latest harvest.

But Sicily en primeur is so much more. Once again this year, Sicilian wine serves as an ambassador to the region’s many treasures: all industry journalists, divided into 8 groups, will have a chance to choose from as many wine tours, to discover Sicily’s wine cellars and some of its precious UNESCO heritage sites, highlighting the special relationship between wine and culture.

Members of the press who arrive in Siracusa on May 9thwill be able to attend this year’s vintage technical presentation delivered by Mattia Filippi, winemaker and consultant founder of Uva Sapiens, followed by this year’s en primeur wine tastings organized by AIS.

On opening day, five Masterclassesled by the Masters of Wine, consultants belonging to the most reputable international association of wine experts, will focus on the following themes:

  • Vineyards with a sea view, wines produced in coastal areas
  • Travelling through time.  The ageing potential of Sicilian wines
  • Doc Sicily. Nero d’Avola, Grillo, and more. The DOC of records.
  • Etna, a constantly evolving territory. Surprising and fertile volcanic soils
  • Small denominations, a great history. The lesser-known Sicilian Docs

Furthermore, anthropologist Rita Cedrinifrom the University of Palermo will close the first day with an introduction to Sicily’s rich artistic and cultural heritage, illustrating the relationship between cultural heritage and local manufacturing traditions.

Le Soste di Ulisse, Assovini Sicilia’s partner for the event, will treat all guests to a very special gala dinner prepared by an exceptional team: the menu will offer a wide-ranging selection of Sicily’s traditional dishes reinterpreted by the expert hands of some of the island’s most renowned chefs. An 8-star dinner prepared by: Tony Lo Coco – I Pupi – Bagheria (PA) (1 Michelin star); Accursio Craparo – Accursio Restaurant – Modica (RG) (1 Michelin star); Giovanni Guarneri – Don Camillo – Siracusa; Giovanni Santoro – Shalai Resort – Linguaglossa (CT) (1 Michelin star); Martina Caruso – Signum – Salina – Aeolian Islands (ME) (1 Michelin star); Pino Cuttaia – La Madia – Licata (AG) (2 Michelin stars); Vincenzo Candiano – Locanda Don Serafino – Ragusa (2 Michelin stars).

Finally, May 10th will be the time to showcase Sicily’s producers and the many faces of Sicilian winemaking thanks to a walk-around tasting of over 500 wines. A unique opportunity for companies and industry professionals to meet up and connect.

Year after year, Sicily en primeur has become an important venue for the promotion of Sicilian wine and its territory. Assovini Sicilia is once again the proud organizer of an itinerant event which gives Sicily an opportunity to be highly visible on international media. Promoting excellent wine is also a way of promoting a unique and valuable territory. For this reason, the association invites all industry journalists to the event, alongside journalists who work for general media, for the tourism and lifestyle sectors alike, as all contribute towards the promotion of Sicily’s image and its many attractions.
